Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer is a spin-off of Animal Crossing where
you can decorate houses and house plots for your favorite villagers. The
interior design feature that was seen in previous games has been extended in
Happy Home Designer. You can decorate villager homes, schools, restaurants,
shops, and even hospitals. You can also redecorate villager homes if you
didn't like what you did.

This guide will cover subjects from how to decorate houses and buildings, what
are the minimum requirements of making villagers happy, how to use amiibo
cards, and a list of items you can unlock.

----------------------------------------|
        Creating a new character |
----------------------------------------|

When you play Happy Home Designer for the first time, Tom Nook will announce
that a new member has joined Happy Home Academy. The first step is to name
your character. It can be based after you, your mayor from Animal Crossing
New Leaf, or a completely new character. Then you get to decide whether it is
a boy or a girl. After that, you will have the following steps to decide:

1. Eye shape and eye color
2. Hairstyle and hair color
3. Skin tone

When you are done, you will be told to change to your new Happy Home Academy
jacket. Go upstairs and change. When you come back down, you will decorate
your first house.

The first house you will decorate is Lottie's house. The description of the
house she wants is "with a lovely atmosphere". The first few items unlocked
are part of the Lovely Series, as well as a few other items. Although this
is your first house you'll be decorating, this is only your training.

The very first house after training is Goldie's house. She wants to be in
"a forest of books". The items in the boxes are a large bookshelf, a stack
of books, and a phonograph. You can decorate her house any way you like as
long as you use all three items in the boxes. When you are done, talk to
Goldie and tell her that you're done decorating.

The next house is Lopez's house. He wants to live in a "stylish house". The
items in the boxes are a glass partition, modern table, and high-end stereo.
Just like Goldie's house, as long as you use the items in the boxes, you are
free to decorate his house any way you like.

On the day after you decorate Lopez's house, another random villager will
appear. At this point, you can do what you want while using the furniture
provided in the boxes. But as the days continue progressing, more and more
features and items will be unlocked.

----------------------------------------|
Steps of decorating villager homes |
----------------------------------------|

After Day 7, you will get to the point where you will get to decorate both the
outdoors and indoors of a villager house. There is a step by step process of
decorating villager homes.

1. Talk to a villager in Main Street (or use the amiibo Phone in the office
   and place amiibo card.
2. Find a plot for the villager's house.
3. Choose floor plan.*
4. Decorate the house plot.**
5. Decorate the house.**
6. Finish workday.

*Must be unlocked through the Happy Home Handbook.
**Can be done both simultaneously and alternatively.

The first step is a very simple step. What you can do here is that you can
pick one of the random villagers in Main Street. If none of them seem to
interest you, another way to call up villagers is by using the amiibo phone.
If you have a new 3DS or new 3DS XL, you can place the amiibo card onto your
3DS system. If you have an older model, you will be required to have a 3DS
NFC amiibo reader to connect. Once you pick the villager you want, you can
continue on. Of course, if you're using the amiibo phone, you can also use it
to decorate non-villager homes (like Isabelle's, Tom Nook's, or Blathers'
houses).

In Steps 2 and 3, you will be working on the pre-designing steps. After
choosing what villager request you want to fulfill, you will be given a huge
map that will show what plots you want to place the villager's house on.
Please choose wisely. If you do like the terrain, but you don't like the
season the plot was set in, you can tap the same plot with your stylus. It
will change seasons from winter, spring, summer, and fall. Once you find the
plot and season you're most comfortable with, you will get to choose what
house plan you want, as long as you have the feature unlocked. When choosing
between house plans, you can choose how many rooms you want and how the
house orientation goes. The one-room plans are 6x6, 6x8, 8x6, and 12x4. The
two-room plans have one 6x6 room and one 4x4 room, with the location of the
smaller room being on different sides of the house.

The mainframe of interior decorating is at steps 4 and 5. In both steps, you
will have multiple selections from items to choose from.

Placing furniture and other items:

1. Browse the menus and find what you want. You can either use the stylus to
do everything or use the analog stick and press A.
2. When an item is out, you can move them like how you did in the main
series, or use the stylus to drag them around. The latter is much quicker
and more precise. You can also see that each tile is broken down into four
smaller squares than of the main series. This can make item movement more
precise, but each item takes up full spaces (one full space equals four
   small spaces).
3. To rotate items, you can tap it with your stylus. For rectangular objects,
if they are too close to a wall or other items, they will rotate 180
   degrees instead of 90 degrees.
4. You can also duplicate items. Hold down the L or R buttons before tapping
on a piece you want to duplicate. It will make an exact copy of the piece.
5. You can refurbish furniture pieces too. In order to do this, you should
drag a furniture piece over to the tool box. You will be given an option
to choose what colors you want the furniture piece to be. Keep in mind
that not all furniture pieces can be modified. Once you pick what colors
you want, tap to remodel to change the furniture piece.
6. If you don't like the item or if you had too much of it, you can drag
it to the trash bin in the bottom-left corner. It will remove the item
   from the plot or plan.

Exterior Design Selections:

When you're outside, you can decorate the villager's house exterior, move it
around, or place items outside. The only boundaries of decorating the
exteriors are the fences, the cliffs, and the water bodies.

1. Architecture - you can choose between different house models, roof designs,
wall designs, doors, and fences. In some plots, there is a bridge. You can
choose what bridge you want for the villager's house.
2. Household Items - you can place household items outside too. Please refer
to the Interior Design Selections menu to see what selections are part of
   this selection.
3. Plants - you can place plants outside too. You can choose what shrubs,
trees, and flowers you want to place.
4. Rugs - you can place rugs outside too. They can act as outdoor paths for
   the villager's plot.
5. Custom Designs - if you have unlocked this feature, you can place patterns
as items, rugs, and even rooftops. In addition, you can redesign patterns
   while designing villager homes.

Interior Design Selections:

On the inside, the menus are a bit different. Instead of plants, you have wall
and ceiling furniture. The architecture section is different than as of the
exterior design.

1. Architecture - all of the wall patterns, floor patterns windows, curtains,
and sound scenery are under this selection. If there is more than one room,
you can choose between different doors.
2. Household Items - the household items are the same indoors as they are
   outdoors.
   A. Home Furniture - all beds, tables, desks, chairs, benches, dressers,
closets, electronics, utility features, lamps, clocks, screens, trash
bins, and some tabletop items go under this category.
   B. Special Furniture - this category contains house plants, food,
commercial furniture, sporting goods, instruments, yard items, and
      toys.
   C. Decorative Items - this category contains decorative furniture pieces,
seasonal furniture, art, music packages, fish, insects, fossils,
      gyroids, and villager pics.
   D. Clothes - all clothing types are under this category, but they will be
used as furniture rather than clothes.
3. Wall and Ceiling Items - interior decorating is more than just decorating
floors and tables. You can place items on the walls, or even the ceilings.
   A. Wall Items - this category contains wall furniture, wall clocks, music
packages, paintings, and clothes on hangers.
   B. Ceiling Items - contains ceiling lights and ceiling accessories.
4. Rugs - on the inside, rugs can be used for carpet decorating if you're
using wooden floors. They can be used on any floor.
5. Custom Designs - if you have unlocked this feature, you can place patterns
as items, rugs, carpets, and wallpaper. Plus, you can redesign the patterns

Between steps 4 and 5, you are free to decorate the way you want. On both
villager remodeling and non-villager decorating, there are no required items.
When decorating villager homes for the first time, there are one to three
required items, and they are all in boxes.

On the last step, you can talk to the villager or non-villager. You can
choose between cancelling their order, continuing, and accepting what you
designed. If you chose the last step, the villager will have a house to live
in, and you can visit the villager at any time, either for remodeling or
visiting.

When you design public facilities, such as schools, hotels, and restaurants,
Isabelle will be with you instead of the animal you're serving. The rules
to designing villager homes are still the same, except that you're dealing
with even larger buildings with no front yard to decorate. Not only that,
but the first step is to choose the exterior design of the building.

Keep in mind that you can only design one house a day, which includes the
tutorials, public facilities, and even remodeling.

----------------------------------------|
        Before/After Decorating |
----------------------------------------|

Around the times before or after decorating a house on each day, you can
explore Main Street attractions or villager homes. You can browse your clients
list and pick who you want to visit. At this point, you can see the past work
you have done on a villager's house or Main Street attraction. Here are the
stuff you can do while visiting:

1. Invite animals over - this feature requires using amiibo cards. When a
card with one villager is placed on the amiibo reader, the villager on the
card will visit, including non-villagers like Isabelle or Tom Nook.
2. Chat with villagers - or see their dialogue over what they're doing.
3. Assign jobs - when you're visiting a Main Street attraction, you can
swap villager roles between workers and customers.
4. Change clothes - while you are forced to be in uniform throughout most of
the game, you don't have to do this when visiting a villager's house or
a Main Street attraction. This can be done by dragging the player over to
the clothing section on the left hand of the touch screen. You can change
to the many different clothes you have available.

When you are inside Nook's Homes, you can do the following things:

1. Change uniform - although the HHA jacket is un-removable, you can change
the other clothes to what you want. This will apply to your uniform when
   you design houses.
2. Change hairstyle - once you unlock the hairstyling machine, you can choose
between different hairstyles and hair colors, if you're getting tired of
   your character's hairstyle.
3. QR Code reader - just like in ACNL, you can read QR codes through the
QR Code reader and save pattern.
4. Happy Home Network - when you finish decorating villager houses, you can
save and upload your design of the houses to the HHN. Over there, you can
   rate others' projects.
5. Happy Home Handbook - you can learn or re-read what special interior
design features you have. This is also a place you can unlock new
   features.
6. Write Daily Report - once you're done for the day, you can write report
and go home. This is where you can save and quit or save and continue.
This will move to the next game.
