To tell if a level has been beaten by Mario or Luigi, you need to look at the flag at the end of the level (play through it). If it is green and has an L, or golden with an L then Luigi beat the level. If the flag has an M and is either red or golden, then Mario beat the level. It does not matter who beats the level.

There will be a gold flag symbol in the corner of the screen if you got the golden flag. The flag will appear on the screen when standing on a level's space on the overwold map (where you also see what star coins you've gotten).
