I know this is not a crystal clear answer, but for your first dog, get the most athletic one possible. Train it in disc competitions and lure coursing ( from what I understand, having the original game and the new one, obedience trials are rigged) a lot ( I mean every time your dog is well cared for. You can train for disc competitions at home, but you need to go to the gym to properly train for lure coursing) If you don't get in first place, this is a cheat to not save the data. If you look on your screen, you will be able to see if you will be in first BEFORE the ceremony. If you don't win, just press the home button and exit out. NOTE: You must save before you enter the competition or all your previous play in that session will be lost.
Also, go on lots of walks when your puppy is in a good mood to get presents. If you don't like what you get, sell it at the second-hand shop for money.
It takes a lot of patience, but you WILL get the money if you spend a lot of time at it.

My advice is just to sell all the stuff you don't need and do not buy anything not needed.

I'd say to walk your dog(I don't know about cats because I'm stil trying to get one)using the pedo-meter* to get treats.(10:dog treats,100:dog biscits,1000:???)Sell them at the 2nd hand.If your dog goes to famashed,go to the BARC and get water and dry food.then repete the proces.
(*I don't know why, but you also earn PLAY COINS.NINTENDO logic.plees tell me why)

In other words,besides shaking ,put your 3DS in a bag and swing it.This is much faster. Or,you can do something crazy to get more steps. Hope this helped!

When you use the pedometer if you walk 9999 steps you get a gold bar.

Try the time travel cheat.Incase you don't know here:When your dog can't go on comps for that day,save the game,exit out the game,go to the settings,go to the time and change the time to 23:59(one min before midnight),quickly exit the settings,go to the game quickly and save.Get out the game if it's not 00:00 you made it just in time and if it's 00:00 restart the process again.When it turns to 00:00 go to the game and you are able to go on comps again!!Also,don't take pictures because it will take a picture the day it turn into!
