The Bell item is designed to get your animals to follow you. You need to be reasonably close to them for it to work, and the more hearts an animal has, the longer it will follow you for.

Black Chickens, or Silkie Chickens, can be attained by either hatching 10 chicks or after Winter in Year 2 through the usual purchase channels. You are also able to trade for a Silkie Egg on Wi-Fi.
The Black-Faced sheep, or Suffolk Sheep, can be attained by having 3 sheep born on your farm or from the Spring of Year 3 via the usual purchase route.
Below are some of the other cows that you can get in Harvest Moon: A New Beginning, as well as instructions on how to get them.
Old-Style Cow:
This cow has been in previous Harvest Moon games, and is distinguished by being a simple black and white cow with no other features. You can get this cow as an alternative prize for winning the Cow Festival in Fall 04.
Larger Cow:
These can be seen in other players' games, and have 10 hearts and give 5 products.
Jersey Cows:
The brown cows are given by either having 3 cows born on your farm, or in Fall of Year 2.

When I was still a beginner farmer in hm I had a lot of trouble taking my chickens outside because when I put them on the ground the would get angry/annoyed (from the scribbles over their head.) They are acting like that because YOU HAVE NOT FED THEM YET.
Two ways to avoid this:
1.) Feed them before you go outside (you buy the food at Neils store)
2.) Get a blueprint with the chicken feeding area so you can feed your chicken once you get outside
