Mario Kart Wii Wiki

Introduction

Mario Kart Wii is the 6th title in the series, and the 4th released on a non-portable console (exclusing the Mario Kart Arcade version). It was released late April of 2008 for the Nintendo Wii as the title depicts, and is the first Mario Kart to use real-life steering wheel-type steering. In the past, each game would come with a Wii wheel peripheral which you could attach your Wii remote to, and allowed you to steer with the Wii wheel in-game to give real-life style steering responses. Mario Kart Wii is also the only game to feature multiple control styles, including Wii remote plus Nunchuck, Classic controller, and Gamecube controller. Although they don't feature real-life steering control, they are ideal for players wanting more precision action, especially for time trials. However, using the Wii Wheel is the only way to get the Golden Steering wheel rank for online matches.

Mario Kart Wii features many game modes, including Grand Prix, Vs. Mode, Battle, and WFC for 4 players, the latter only for 2 (being the first game allowing 2 players to play online on the same console at a time). Grand Prix and Vs feature the same style gameplay as in previous Mario Kart Games. Battle Mode removes Shine Runners and adds Coin Runners instead, making for a more frantic and strategic gameplay. Nintendo WFC allows you to play in races Worldwide, Regional, or Local. Up to 12 players can be in a match at a time (the first Mario Kart to allow so) and Versus Rank (or VR) can be earned to match you with players near your VR to allow for more fair matches. VR is split between Battle and Races. The other unique option this game allows is Online Tournaments, which change around each month or so and still run today. You'll occasionally recieve mail on your Wii (if it's connected to WFC and Mario Kart Wii Channel is downloaded) and you can launch to the Tournament from there.

Mario Kart Wii has the largest character roster ever, featuring 24 Mario Characters, and your Mii, which has 2 different outfits (the 2nd of which is unlocked later). There are Karts and Bikes unique to the weight class, and 3 weight classes. Your Mii's height and weight determined in Mii Maker determine its weight class in-game. Miis also have the highest average stat boosts, and each character has a unique stat boost configuration, so be sure to try out each one!

Mario Kart Wii is still available today, and is still the largest WFC game for Wii to date. It can be played on the Wii U, but Gamecube controllers will not work. It's a very fun game, still fun to this very day, and offers a distinct challenge other Mario Kart titles don't have.
