It is not necessary to kill every enemy you encounter especially if they do not have a Lum in their posssion. If this is the case it is better to just avoid them.

Concentrate on finishing a level as opposed to trying to find every Lum in it. Using this strategy will give you a stronger knowledge of where they are located when you next play.

If you are lucky enough to have found a heart (they are rare) it will take two as opposed to one hit for you to die. Falling off the level is still a one-hit kill.

You can get several Lums in one go by getting the giant floating gold coins. Just make sure you get them before the coin explodes.

Hidden Lums can be found when you let yourself fall down certain gaps or jump the opposite way off a vine.
